Apple seeks international licensing for iTunes Match, iCloud

According to a report from CNET, Apple is actively negotiating with music labels to secure international licensing for both iTunes Match and iCloud. Currently, iTunes Match only functions for US-based developers; iTunes in the Cloud, which auto-syncs purchases across devices, is also a US-only affair. CNET believes the service may be able to roll out internationally and debut at Apple's October 4 press event if negotiations can be completed in time.

CNET's sources have said the service may roll out to the UK, France, and Germany initially. Hopefully it won't take too much longer for licensing deals to enable service across all nations with access to the iTunes Store.

iCloud and iTunes Match are both expected to debut this fall, possibly soon after Apple's media event next week. The services will likely launch alongside the public release of iOS 5 and OS X Lion 10.7.2.

Hybrid drives could usher in Macs with more, cheaper storage

A new Apple patent published Thursday by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office reveals plans for a new type of hybrid drive that combines the benefits of both platter-based and flash storage. It's not a new idea, but Apple's patent contains a unique new twist.

10.7: Dual Monitor full-screen app trick

With the introduction of Lion we have full-screen mode, which is cool and all, but for users with multiple monitors, the spare monitor(s) are rendered somewhat useless with a fabric pattern background -- useful for only applications that spawn child windows, such as tool palettes, etc.

However, if you utilize the full-screen swipe gesture to move to a separate full screen and pause/stop in the middle with multiple Spaces in view and invoke another application (i.e. via Spotlight), the spawned application can reside in the 'fabric space' or anywhere else. It basically remains attached to that space.

Awesome news for those with multiple monitors!

[crarko adds: I don't have a multiple display setup at the moment to try this out. Please give this a whirl and post your results in the comments. It sounds a bit bizarre to me, but seems worth documenting, if it works.]
